In the state of Colorado, anyone can use the title of nutritionist, nutrition counselor or nutrition advisor regardless of education and credentials. On the other hand, a registered dietitian and registered dietetic technician are required to meet specific educational and professional standards.

What is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)?
An RDN is an expert in food and nutrition who:
- has a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nutrition
- has completed an internship or professional experience
- has passed a national registration exam
- participates in continuing education
What is a Dietetic Technician, Registered (DTR)?
A DTR is a qualified nutrition technician who:
- has completed a minimum of a two-year dietetic technician program
- has passed a national registration exam
- participates in continuing education
